Pick Your Poison Teaching Series

1 John 2:16 New International Version (NIV)

16 For everything in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—comes not from the Father but from the world.

We are going to be doing a six week teaching on KBOE 104.9 F.M on Sunday mornings from 8:30-9:00 a.m. This teaching, Pick Your Poison, will be dealing with addictions. We will be talking drugs, alcohol, sex, obesity, smoking, work addiction, and internet addictions. This will not be one of those feel good teaching series, but it will be life changing. The Holy Spirit has placed this on my heart and has called me to do this series.

One that I struggle with is work addiction. Working is a good thing, and do not misunderstand me here. Work is important. As a matter of fact, the Bible is loaded with Scripture about working hard. For instance, Colossians 3:23 says, “Whatever you do, work with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human matters.”

I failed in the latter part of the verse. I struggle with working for human matter or more simply man’s approval. I am working through the empty space in my heart of only needing God’s approval and not man’s approval. So, I tend to lean toward man’s approval. Then is would work all the more.

When you work for man’s approval and work more than is necessary and over work, there are unpleasant consequences. There are failed relationships that come from over working. Family suffers from the absence. Now, work is a good thing when it is directed toward the approval of the Lord. Practice allowing yourself to work for the Lord’s approval and to have healthy boundaries with work, if this is a problem area for you, as well. I continue to this day to practice more healthy boundaries when it comes to work, and I am a work in progress as I learn to work for the Lord and give myself rest.

Men, we take nothing with us to the grave. We came from the dirt, and we will return to the dirt. Those in Christ will rise from the grave and receive an eternal reward for his or her ‘Work’.

Work to build the Kingdom of the Lord. Work for Jesus.

Caught Any Fish

John 21:5 New International Version (NIV)

He called out to them, “Friends, haven’t you any fish?”

“No,” they answered.

This is one of my favorite portions of Scripture in the Bible. The place in which Jesus reinstated Peter is one of my favorite places to see when I go to Israel. We find the disciples acting out like most men when they do not know what to do. We go to a place that we know. We are comfortable there. For Simon Peter and the other disciples, it was fishing.

We see Jesus’ love for Simon Peter here. He tells them to throw the net on the right side of the boat, and they do it. It is said that the net was so full of fish, they could not haul it in. As a matter of fact, there were 153 large fish. Numbers mean something to God.

Peter realized that is was Jesus on the shore. Peter jumps into the water and goes to Jesus. He is dripping wet, and he is standing in front of Jesus. Their eyes are locked. The last time Peter saw Jesus, he had denied knowing Jesus.

It does not say, but I bet Jesus grabbed him arms open wide as a brother. Jesus goes on to reinstate Peter by telling him 3 times to feed his sheep. Peter comes to the end of himself.

Peter never failed in his faith from that time on. He would never go back to fishing for fish. His life would be fishing for men.

Men, what about you? Caught any fish lately?

It is time to go fishing for men.

As Jesus was telling Peter to follow him, you do the same and follow Jesus. You will be fishers of men.

Go Tell

Mark 16:15 New International Version (NIV)

15 He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation.

This past weekend we celebrated Easter, the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. According to the Bible, Jesus stayed with his disciples another 40 days before he ascended into Heaven. It has been noted that Jesus was seen by over 500 people. This is found in 1 Corinthians 15:3-8.

The first people Jesus met was Mary Magdalene and the other Mary. They were greeted by an angel in Matthew 28:5. The angel told them to not be afraid and he knew they were looking for Jesus. Jesus had risen as he had said he would.

As they were running from the tomb, what does Jesus do? He meets them on the way. It says they went to his feet and grasped them and worshiped him. He tells the women to go tell his brothers to leave for Galilee and wait for him there. Next week we will look at the charcoal fire.

The importance of this moment for the two Marys was they had seen him and that he had risen. Can you imagine that moment for a minute. The last time that they had seen him, he was nailed to a cross. Now they were filled with great joy.

Their joy moved the to GO TELL. How is your joy level today. I have a friend who asks me how my joy level is.

Men, today we should be filled with great joy for what Jesus has done. He rose from the dead. Death could not defeat him.

Will you go tell? Jesus promised through the power of the Holy Spirit that he would give us courage.

Easter is not over. Jesus is returning.
