The Measure of Strength

2 Timothy 2:1New International Version (NIV)

The Appeal Renewed

You then, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus

Often as men we measure strength by the outside appearance of a man. What is his physique. Is he muscular? Is he handsome? Is he ripped? Does he have a six pack? These are all based on outward appearance.

There are many times in the Bible where God commanded men to be strong. One of my favorite verses in life is within the Book of Joshua. The Lord commands him 3 times in the first chapter to be strong before he leads Israel into the Promise Land to face enemies which were described as giants.

Was God asking Joshua to lift heavy objects or move might walls? No, God was referencing the command of strength to be more of a deeper and an infinitely required inner strength.

Maybe the better alternative to measuring strength is by endurance. This kind of strength is called courage. Courage, itself, is a better indicator of a man’s strength.

God called out Joshua to be strong 3 times, but he also called out courage 3 times. He needed courage to face the trials and tribulations. He also needed to have the ability to be virtuous and moral regardless of the situation.

In 2 Timothy, Paul encouraged Timothy by pointing out the greatest source of strength known to man. He needed to be strengthened by the grace of God. It is in Christ Jesus and in his grace that we will find the measure of a man’s strength. It is in having right relationship with Jesus that we receive grace and where we will find the measure of our strength.

Finding Fault

Daniel 6:4New International Version (NIV)

At this, the administrators and the satraps tried to find grounds for charges against Daniel in his conduct of government affairs, but they were unable to do so. They could find no corruption in him, because he was trustworthy and neither corrupt nor negligent.

Have you ever wondered how Daniel lived a life in which no one could find in who he was, what he did, and how he lived life behind closed doors? This is a thought provoking question for a Monday.

We see in the book of Daniel that he aligned his heart with God’s heart. He sought God’s will to be done through him. He had a consistent and prayerful focus, he grew as a God follower, and as a person and leader.

Daniel had a prayer life and practiced it three times a day. He would take time to worship God and looked toward Heaven. This habit got him thrown into a lions’ den. He spent the night watching an angel holding the mouths of the lions shut. Not one scratch was found on him the next day.

What if we chose that practice? What if we chose worshiping and praying to God. In turn it would be said that we were faithful men, responsible men, and trustworthy men. That would make an impact with our wives, children, places of work, and in our community.

How hard would it be to have people find fault in us? Today is a good day for heart alignment. When we choose a Kingdom focus and live a life of prayer and worship, we become a heavenly force to contend with. Let’s live a life where it is hard to find fault in how we live life.

The Price of Disobedience

1 Samuel 13:8New International Version (NIV)

He waited seven days, the time set by Samuel; but Samuel did not come to Gilgal, and Saul’s men began to scatter.

Why does there have to be that work in life, ‘but’? In the ‘but’ comes the anxiousness of life. It is the crucial moment of success or failure. King Saul paid a great price for the rest of his life because of the, ‘but’ moment.

In the Bible, you read how this tragic moment in the life of Saul plays out. It leads to frustration and trying to seize the moment, knowing it is an act of disobedience. Saul offers a sacrifice to God and disobeyed Samuel’s command.

Now, I think Saul thought in his mind that his troops were fearful. They were slipping out of the ranks ad running. This meant he had to do something. So he does, but what a mistake. Samuel arrives on the scene and asks him, “What have you done?”

This turn of events costs Saul his Kingdom and favor with God. What a moment for Saul. He had it all going for him. He was tall and strong, but weak in faith. Because of his disobedience, God raised up another man, King David. He was a man who chased after God’s heart.

The true tragedy in the story is King Saul’s lack of forgiveness. No where do we see a repentant heart. Saul was a man of moments. He worked out of his own intellect as to looking to God for guidance.

How about you today? Are you paying a price for disobedience and feeling lost that you have lost favor with Jesus? Today is the day of salvation, men! Repent, get on your knees, and cry out to Jesus. He is there, even in our disobedience. He is the King of restored lives. His blood has bought and paid for us, so we might live in obedience and relationship with Jesus our Lord.
