Bring A Good Man

1 Corinthians 16:13 New International Version (NIV)

13 Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be courageous; be strong.

I often get asked, “How do I become a godly man?” Obviously, according to the Bible there is nothing good in us outside of Christ. God is the only thing that is good or capable of being good. All this is true, but I do believe we can become a godly man. Here are 5 ways to become that man.

  1. Step Up, Lead, and Initate

God is looking for good men who will stand in the gap. Ezekiel 22:30 says, ‘I searched for a man among them who wold build up the wall and stand in the gap before me for the Lord, so that I would not destroy it, but I found no one.’

2. Speak Out: Silence in the Midst of Sin Is a Sin – Be Courageous

God is looking for men who will speak truth in love. The Bible says in Proverbs 27:5-6, ‘Better is open rebuke that love that is concealed. Faithful are the words of a friend, but deceitful are the kisses of an enemy.’

3. Stand Strong: Do Not Give in When You Are Challenged, Attacked, Or Criticized

God is looking for men who will stand strong. The Bible says in 1 Corinthians 15:58, ‘Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your toil is not in vain.’

4. Stay Humble: Be Vigilant Against Pride

Godly men stay humble. The fight against selfish pride. The Bible says in 1 Peter 5:5-7, ‘You younger men, likewise, be subject to your elders; and all of you clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, for God is opposed to the proud, but gives grace to the humble. Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that he might exalt you at the proper time, casting all your anxiety on him, because he cares for you.’

5. Serve the King: Seek, First His Kingdom, His Glory, and His Righteousness

Godly men serve the Risen King, Jesus. The Bible says in Matthew 6:33, ‘But seek first his Kingdom and his Righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.’

Are You Happy?

Proverbs 17:22 New International Version (NIV)

22 A cheerful heart is good medicine,
but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.

In our colleges and universities you will find a course that is consistent to be the most popular, ‘What Does It Mean to be Happy’. College students are flocking to take the course. The students feel overwhelmed, stressed, anxious, and depressed. In my mind, it is not just college students in today’s culture that face these kind of issues in their life.

According to a survey of why college students are not happy, it says that 52% feel hopeless and 39% suffer from sever depression. Then, according to a statistic in happiness across the world, the United States is rated number 18, as to Finland is rated number, Canada is number 7, and Australia is number 10.

To me being happy is a moving target. There are moments of happiness, moments of sadness, moments of triumph, moments of discouragement, and moments of pleasure to name just a few. My thoughts are that we have become a self indulged society were it becomes the ‘all about me’ thinking. It can also be the thoughts that the people around me are to make me happy. Good luck with that.

As my Pappy used to say, “Seize the moments of happiness because they are like sand in your hands. They soon dissolve and blow away.”

To be happy is a choice of attitude, and sometimes we need help with that. I like what the Bible says in Philippians 4:4, ‘Rejoice in the Lord always; again, I will say, rejoice!’ Rejoicing in the Lord comes from the depths of the soul. That is where true happiness is found.

Fan or Flame

2 Timothy 1:6 New International Version (NIV)

Appeal for Loyalty to Paul and the Gospel

For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands.

Are we willing to fan for the Gospel? Paul was encouraging young Timothy to be bold in his faith and not allow any distractions to get in the way, especially due to his young age. Paul was an encourager to young Timothy, and he saw something in Timothy.

We all need encouragement and other men in our lives to encourage us to fan the flame for the Gospel Message. How in your flame for the Gospel Message? This is not like a match flame or a campfire flame. This is a big brush fire flame.

A flame needs oxygen as it burns or it will eventually go out. For young Timothy, that oxygen came from the words of his mentor, Paul. The words were like oxygen to flame his boldness, power, and self-discipline. Pauls words were like oxygen to Timothy’s faith.

I have found that the greatest source of oxygen to my flame is in the Holy Spirit. When I hear his voice, read my Bible, have prayer time, and when I get an encouraging word from the Lord, this fans my flame.

My hope today is that you find ways to fan your flame of faith. My hope is that even the devotionals that your receive from Vital Men and the 5 spirit filled writers help you. Keep your flame burning like a big brush fire.
