John 16:33 (NASB) ‘These things I have spoken to you, so that in Me you may have peace. In the world you have tribulation, but take courage; I have overcome the world.’
I see, over and over, people trying to manufacture their own peace and security. We do it in virtually every aspect of our lives. What ALWAYS ends up happening is an erosion and crumbling of that creation.
We work on building safety nets for the future, prepare for the storms of life, guard against difficulty and struggle. That is all well and good. We need to make plans for contingencies and potential difficulties. We need to be responsible stewards and manage what the Lord has blessed us with, not only for our sake, but for the sake of others. The problem is not the act of doing these things, creating these safety nets and safe harbors. The issue is placing our trust, faith and allowing our sense of peace to hinge on them.
There is only one place for a true sense of peace and security. Ask anyone who has faced a life threatening situation, one that no amount of money can affect. Ask a parent who lost a child if the luxuriousness of their house comforted them through their pain. The answer over and over will be a resounding and emphatic NO!
Rich or poor, have or have not, with or without, peace and security, our ability to stand in the face of our hardest assaults, comes from one place and one place only, Jessus Christ our Lord. To lean on anything else is merely waiting for crushing defeat. Lean on Jesus, and overcome the world. Have a blessed weekend.
