‘ While walking by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon (who is called Peter) and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen. And he said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.” ‘ Matthew 4:18-19
I am heading out, for Colorado, in the morning. I plan on spending some time with my fly rod. As I think about and look forward to this, the above passage comes to mind. I ask myself, have I been, am I currently, what one would consider a fisher of men?
I certainly have my moments. I am firmly rooted in faith and am generally not hesitant in sharing the good news with others. However, I know that I am not always engaged and as intentional as I should be. I oftentimes feel compelled to speak and act on behalf of Jesus, but resist and fail to obey. As long as I tread this earth, I will be a work in progress. I will fall short, I will mess up, but being mindful of our shortcomings is the first step necessary toward growth and betterment. The second is desiring to change the things we recognize.
As I write this I pray, “Jesus, arouse this desire in me, reveal to me my shortcomings and the ways in which you would have me change and grow. Embolden me in ways in which there would be no reluctance or hesitation to share Your Gospel. Teach me obedience, patience, empathy and compassion. Guide me Lord, help me discipline myself to the path you’d have me pursue. Teach me to fish for You, Jesus. Amen.” Have a blessed weekend.
