Test of Devotion

2 Kings 2:3 New International Version (NIV)

The company of the prophets at Bethel came out to Elisha and asked, “Do you know that the Lord is going to take your master from you today?”

“Yes, I know,” Elisha replied, “so be quiet.”

Elisha knew that Elijah would be headed to heaven soon. Yet, Elisha wanted to be with him every minute he could. He wanted to take in every word from the old prophet and learn from his life.

Elijah was actually testing Elisha by asking him to stay and wait. He wanted to know how deep was the devotion of the young prophet. Why? It was because God would take obedience and perseverance.

We see Jesus doing the same with his disciples. What was their depth of devotion? In Luke 14:22 it says, “And whoever does not bear his cross and come after me cannot be my disciple.”

True devotion to Christ will cost you something. A trust test of devotion is to get rid of sin. Yes, sin is all around us. Are you allowing sin to creep into your life? Get rid of it, and ask the Holy Spirit to help you.

Jesus sent the Holy Spirit to keep our lives in check. He will help you keep a life of devotion. Christ’s disciples figured that out, and the same is for us today. A life of devotion gets rid of sin, reads God’s Word, and prays to Jesus.

How is your devotion today?

Strength and Courage

Michael
