Exodus 3:13-15 New International Version (NIV)
13 Moses said to God, “Suppose I go to the Israelites and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ Then what shall I tell them?”
14 God said to Moses, “I am who I am. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I am has sent me to you.’”
15 God also said to Moses, “Say to the Israelites, ‘The Lord, the God of your fathers—the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob—has sent me to you.’
“This is my name forever,
the name you shall call me
from generation to generation.
The Egyptians had many gods with many different names. Moses wanted to know God’s name. Then, the Hebrews would know exactly who had sent him to them. God called himself, I Am. This name describes his eternal power and unchangeable character. In this world our values change, culture changes, morals change, and laws change. There is not stability in our world. But, you can find stability, security, and an unchanging character in God. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever. God’s nature is stable and trustworthy. You are free to follow God and enjoy him. Do not waste your time trying to figure him out. Get to know him for who he is. God is I AM. God says, “Be still and know that I am God.”
