Genesis 15:17 New International Version (NIV)
17 When the sun had set and darkness had fallen, a smoking fire pot with a blazing torch appeared and passed between the pieces.
Why did God send this vision to Abram? God takes his covenants seriously. When God makes a promise, he keeps his promise. It was important for Abram to take everything seriously. There are times God will send signs to help understanding. God gave Abram a sign to confirm his promise with Abram. The fire and the smoke represented God’s holiness, his zeal for righteousness, and that he will judge the nations. God took the initiative to confirm his promise. When God passed through the pieces, this showed Abram that the covenant was real. There are times when we need confirmation and reassurance. Always remember that God will always do what is best for you, and he will always keep his word.
