Ecclesiastes 3:1-8 (NASB) ‘There is an appointed time for everything. And there is a time for every event under heaven- A time to give birth and a time to die; A time to plant and a time to uproot what is planted. A time to kill and a time to heal; A time to tear down and a time to build up. A time to weep and a time to laugh; A time to mourn and a time to dance. A time to throw stones and a time to gather stones; A time to embrace and a time to shun embracing. A time to search and a time to give up as lost; A time to keep and a time to throw away. A time to tear apart and a time to sew together; A time to be silent and a time to speak. A time to love and a time to hate; A time for war and a time for peace. ‘
Last week I wrote about this passage and how the moments and seasons of our lives are continually shifting. This passage illustrates how there’s a time for everything. Bad times, as well as good, will come and go at their designated times.
I wanted to spend just a little more time on this passage. I wanted to highlight another aspect of this passage. The author points out the appointed time for these seasons and implies the passage of these times, but there is also a clear alluding to a requirement of action on our part. Throughout our lives and these various appointed times, we’re called upon to have discernment as to the appropriate action, the response required of us within those appointed times. The nature of this passage isn’t a passive one, suggesting that we are to simply go along for the ride and wait for the next appointed time. It is a call to action. There is an appointed time for us to act, react and respond in particular ways to the season we find ourselves.
So, don’t just sit back and think, “it is what it is” and passively take a seat for the ride. Engage the moment(s), determine the appropriate course for you to take and act accordingly. Have a blessed weekend.
