Genesis 37:3 New International Version (NIV)
3 Now Israel loved Joseph more than any of his other sons, because he had been born to him in his old age; and he made an ornate robe for him.
Back in this time, everyone had a robe or a cloak. They were used for warmth, to hold belongings, to wrap babies, to sit on, or to even be used as security for a loan. They were usually knee length, short sleeved, and plain in color. The robe that was given to Joseph was a robe that could have been for royalty. It was long sleeved, ankle length, and very colorful. This robe became a symbol of his favoritism. This aggravated his brothers and caused strained relations with them. Favoritism in families may happen. It may be difficult or impossible to change feelings toward a favorite child, but actions can be changed. Choose to show each child his or her value and love each one for who he or she is.
