38 So the cloud of the Lord was over the tabernacle by day, and fire was in the cloud by night, in the sight of all the Israelites during all their travels.
The Israelites were once slaved in Egypt. They were following a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night. They were carrying the Tabernacle they had built for God. Exodus begins in gloom and ends in glory. We have the same progress through life. We begin as slaves to sin. Then, we are redeemed by God. We get to end our pilgrimage living with God forever.
