‘The Lord was with Joseph, so he became a successful man. And he was in the house of his master, the Egyptian. Now his master saw that the Lord was with him and how the Lord caused all that he did to prosper in his hand. So Joseph found favor in his sight and became his personal servant; and he made him overseer over his house, and all that he owned he put in his charge. It came about that from the time he made him overseer in his house and over all that he owned, the Lord blessed the Egyptian’s house on account of Joseph; thus the Lord ’ s blessing was upon all that he owned, in the house and in the field. So he left everything he owned in Joseph’s charge; and with him there he did not concern himself with anything except the food which he ate. ‘ Genesis 39:2-6
As I continue to prepare for Sunday’s sermon on Joseph, I’d like to share a little more of my study with you. In this passage it is made unambiguously clear that God’s presence is with Joseph. His life in Egypt is governed by God’s providential care. In spite of having been sold into slavery, Joseph is successful and prospers.
It’s not revealed when Joseph committed his life to obedience of God, but it’s evidenced throughout this retelling of Joseph’s story. Joseph found favor and blessing through an apparent unwavering faith in God, His design and provision. In all the wrong done to Joseph, bitterness, anger, and scorn would have been an understandable reaction. However, we don’t see it. Instead, we see him remain steadfast in faith and maintain his integrity in the face of it all.
I offer this as an example of something to take into contemplative consideration as we look at our own life and what perspective we chose to respond from. Have a blessed weekend.
