Are you able to be disrupted? Or are you too cool to be disrupted? Too proud to be challenged by disruptions? Do you have everything under control?
I have observed over the past six years in the brokenness of myself and other men that we try to NOT be bothered or disrupted by events or situations that challenge us … loss of a job; scary health diagnosis; breach in a relationship; etc.
This past week I was pulled over while driving because I had been speeding. While this was not an overly significant event, it actually was a HUGE opportunity for me to choose to be honest, to be obedient, to be disrupted. When the officer asked me if I knew why he pulled me over, I was honest. I said, “Yes – I was speeding.” When he asked me if I had been texting while I was driving, again … I was honest. I said, “Yes – I was texting.”
I’ve shared in the past that PRIDE is my shadow side, my premier challenge. Twenty years ago I had so many speeding tickets within a couple years, I almost lost my driver’s license on two different occasions. I thought I could control my situation back then. I did not want to admit that I had a problem with speeding and respecting laws and authority.
James 4:6 NIV God opposes the proud, but shows favor to the humble.
I hope we remain disruptable. My prayer is that challenging situations interrupt our standard process & bring us to Jesus. That these challenges break us down to surrender to God and His direction instead of trying to control what is happening. Confession, surrender, repentance and humility keep our hearts tender and keep us in step with Abba Father.
