Scripture:
“Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor. If either of them falls down, one can help the other up. But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up. Also, if two lie down together, they will keep warm, but how can one keep warm alone? Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.” Ecclesiastes 4:9-12
Lesson:
Why do I need a sponsor and/or an accountability partner? There are three reasons why having a sponsor and/or an accountability partner is vital:
- Having a sponsor and/or accountability partner is biblical. “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.” Proverbs 27:17
- Having a sponsor and/or accountability partner is a key part to your recovery and healing journey. *Maintain your relationship with Jesus. *Develop a strong support team so you can maintain an honest view of reality. *Find a recovery or small group and make meetings a priority. *Get involved in service, including serving as a sponsor or accountability partner.
- Having a sponsor and/or accountability partner is the best guard against relapse or going back to old, dysfunctional patterns. *A sponsor and/or accountability partner provides feedback to keep you on track. *He or she can confront you with truth and love without placing shame or guilt.
Life Application:
Once we decide to turn our life over to Christ, the enemy will work overtime to try and drag us back into our old way of life and the lies that we were believing. That is why it is important to have a good sponsor. Your sponsor will help speak life and truth into you in those hard times. He will also help you grow more in your faith and your relationship with Christ. Make sure to choose someone you have great trust and respect for. And someone whose character is above reproach.
*Celebrate Recovery meets Tuesday nights at the McVay Family Center in New Sharon. This is a safe place to find honesty, hope, and healing. The meal starts at 6 pm, and the lesson begins at 6:30 pm. Hope to see you there!
