The Spirit of sonship is the Holy Spirit that grants believers a deep, intimate, and confident identity as cherished children of God. . It enables believers to cry out “Abba, Father,” allowing for a relationship rooted in love, security, and access to God’s inheritance rather than performance-based striving.

Romans 8:15

15 The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by him we cry, “Abba, Father.”

Key Aspects of the Spirit of Sonship:

Intimacy and Adoption: The core of this spirit is the affirmation that we are adopted into God’s family, shifting our mindset from a slave’s fear to a child’s love.

“Abba, Father”: A heartfelt, relational term (meaning “Daddy” or “Papa”) that shows a close, trusting relationship with God.

Against the “Orphan Spirit”: This spirit contrasts with an “orphan spirit” that feels it must work to earn love, is insecure, and fears abandonment.

Identity in Christ: It allows us to relate to God just as Jesus does, sharing in his identity as a beloved child and his inheritance.

Freedom and Security: Because the identity is secured, it brings freedom from shame and fear, enabling people to live with a confidence that they are accepted, loved, and guided by a Father.

The spirit of sonship operates not by striving for approval, but by working from a place of divine acceptance and belonging.
