I know, I know. Palm Sunday is behind us. It is in the past. Why would I focus on it now?
This past week I have been more focused on the importance of Palm Sunday compared to past years because I’m realizing the significance of Jesus’ engagement for His time, but also for our time. While the Israelites were looking to Jesus to be a political king, Jesus lived into his role of Prince of Peace while He served and saved people instead of slaughtering people.
Dutch Sheets captured my attention about the impact of Palm Sunday for us when he identified 3 reasons why it is valuable for us even today to celebrate Palm Sunday:
- It is a celebration of Christ’s governmental authority. It’s a reminder that Jesus is the rightful King of the nations. Our celebration declares that Jesus has the right to rule our families, our cities, and our nation.
- It reminds us to discern the times. Celebrating Palm Sunday reminds us to keep our spiritual senses sharp. We don’t want to be like the religious elite who were so stuck in their traditions that they missed God standing right in front of them!
- It prepares us for Christ’s second entry. Palm Sunday is our rehearsal. We are practicing the atmosphere of heaven, and we are seeding the earth with the praise that will one day rise from ALL creation to greet our King when He returns to take His place over ALL the earth.
Praying for a meaningful Holy Week and Easter for all of us.
