5 Now when all the Amorite kings west of the Jordan and all the Canaanite kings along the coast heard how the Lord had dried up the Jordan before the Israelites until they had crossed over, their hearts melted in fear and they no longer had the courage to face the Israelites.
The Israelites spent 39 years in the wilderness because they were terrified of the Canaanites. This did not have to happen. They underestimated God’s ability. With the failure to enter the Promised Land the first time behind them, the Israelites saw that the Canaanites were afraid of them now. The Canaanites had heard about God’s victories for the Israelites. They were also hoping the flooded Jordan River would stop them from crossing. The crossing of the Israelites on dry ground caused the Canaanites to melt in fear. Do you underestimate God? Are you faithful to God? Know that God will perform miracles for you and that if you are faithful to him, he will cause the opposition to disappear. God can change the attitudes of those who oppose him.
