Numbers 6:1-4 New International Version (NIV)
The Nazirite
6 The Lord said to Moses, 2 “Speak to the Israelites and say to them: ‘If a man or woman wants to make a special vow, a vow of dedication to the Lord as a Nazirite, 3 they must abstain from wine and other fermented drink and must not drink vinegar made from wine or other fermented drink. They must not drink grape juice or eat grapes or raisins. 4 As long as they remain under their Nazirite vow, they must not eat anything that comes from the grapevine, not even the seeds or skins.
At this time a vow was as binding as a written contract. It was very serious when a solemn vow was made. God created the Nazirite vow for people who wanted to devote some time exclusively to serving him. This vow could last 30 days or a life time. It was voluntary with the exception that parents could take the vow for their children, and they would be Nazirites for life. The purpose was to raise up leaders devoted to God. Samson, Samuel, and John the Baptist were probably Nazirites for life. You can live a life devoted to God. Today, begin reading your Bible daily and spend time with God each and every day. Walk with him daily throughout your day. He wants to be apart of your whole life. You have a friend in God.
