The Death of Samson
23 Now the rulers of the Philistines assembled to offer a great sacrifice to Dagon their god and to celebrate, saying, “Our god has delivered Samson, our enemy, into our hands.”
24 When the people saw him, they praised their god, saying,
“Our god has delivered our enemy
into our hands,
the one who laid waste our land
and multiplied our slain.”
Dagon was the god of grain and harvest, and worship included human sacrifice. The people would crowd into the temple to watch the torture and humiliation of prisoners. The Philistines had control over the Israelites and thought their god was stronger than God, but little did they know that God’s strength goes beyond human understanding and is greater than numbers of people or physical strength. Does it seem at times that the enemy has won? Do you feel like you see more bad things happening than good? Do not worry or be afraid. God has all things and all time in the palm of his hand. Hunker down in the cloak of Jesus and rest in the love and care God has for you and know that God is God and God’s strength and power prevail.
