17 No Israelite man or woman is to become a shrine prostitute. 18 You must not bring the earnings of a female prostitute or of a male prostitute into the house of the Lord your God to pay any vow, because the Lord your God detests them both.
Forbidding prostitution may seem obvious, but the Israelites were surrounded by religions where prostitution was an important part of the worship services. What does prostitution do? It makes a mockery of God’s original design for sex. Prostitution treats sex as an isolated, physical act. Sex between a married man and woman is an act of commitment. Outside of marriage, sex destroys relationships. Within a marriage, if approached with the right attitude, can be a relationship builder. God had to warn the Israelites against extramarital sex. Today, we still need that same warning. Follow God’s Law for a healthy marriage.
