Exodus 3:5-6 New International Version (NIV)
5 “Do not come any closer,” God said. “Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy ground.” 6 Then he said, “I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob.” At this, Moses hid his face, because he was afraid to look at God.
At God’s command Moses removed his sandals and covered his face. Taking off his shoes demonstrated an act of reverence. This conveyed that Moses was unworthy before God. Through God you are made worthy. God is our friend, but he also is our sovereign Lord. Do not approach God in a frivolous way that shows a lack of respect and sincerity. When you approach God, show him respect and reverence. Go to him with a sincere heart and mind. When you come to God in worship, approach him showing him honor, for all glory is his and for him. Come to him as an invited guest to sit before the King. Make sure you have a right attitude for approaching our Holy God. Holy, Holy, Holy, is our Lord God Almighty.
