¹² “Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you.

Respecting authority is important. For the Israelites to live in peace for generations, they would need to respect authority and build strong families. How do you honor parents? Speak well of them. Be polite to them. Show them courtesy and respect. When you disobey your parent, that is disobedience to God. Follow their teaching and example of putting God first. Parents have a special place in God’s sight. Even if it is difficult to get along with your parents, we are still commanded to honor them.
