Deuteronomy 4:40 New International Version (NIV)
40 Keep his decrees and commands, which I am giving you today, so that it may go well with you and your children after you and that you may live long in the land the Lord your God gives you for all time.
Are we guaranteed prosperity for obeying God’s laws? Yes, but what does that mean? God’s laws are designed to keep us healthy, just, and merciful. Looking back at Israel’s history, when they followed God’s laws, they prospered. Prosperity does not mean that there will be no sickness, sadness, or misunderstandings. This means that Israel prospered as a nation and problems were handled as fairly as possible. What does that mean for us? Today, God’s promise of prosperity means his constant presence, peace, and resources to live as we navigate through life. You will have troubles in life. You will face problems in life. You can avoid misery by obeying God’s laws and avoiding intentional sin. Obeying brings peace and life. Sin brings misery and death. Know that a great treasure is waiting for you in Heaven as you trust and obey.
