New Song

by | Jul 11, 2019 | Vital Men Devotions

What is your reaction when you hear a new song that you like?  For me, I usually try to find out the name of the song or group, if I am not familiar with them, so I can look it up later.  If I miss those, it may take another time or two before I catch it and by that time, at least part of the song may be stuck in my head as well.  What is it about a new song that holds your attention and gets stuck in your head?  This can happen with songs you like, as well as songs you wish would leave your mind and never return.  Is it a catchy melody, or that words that have as strong meaning or connection to you?  It may even be from a new band you have never heard of that may just be a one-hit-wonder, but made an impact on you with the once chance they got.  What new song is on your heart today?

He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God.  Many will see and fear the Lord and put their trust in him.  Psalm 40:3

This past week, I found an old CD I had made of my favorite tunes from about 15 years ago.  I put it in the car and rediscovered some favorite songs I had not head in some time, but almost immediately knew the tunes and most of the words to many of the songs.  It was fun to revisit these, which also brought new life and energy to my day, in a fun sort of way.  Is there a song that you learned years ago, maybe even as a child, that brings back good memories every time you hear it?  There are several hymns that do this for me, which when I sing them, the words are more true every time I go through the verses.  One song that played as I danced with my new wife on our wedding day brings me back to that moment.  Music can be powerful.  Even old songs can bring life back to our souls in both old and new ways, depending on the setting.  What old songs bring new life to you?

Sing to him a new song;  play skillfully, and shout for joy.  Psalm  33:3

What new things do you say to the Lord in your time with Him each day?  Is it usually the same old song and refrain of what He has heard before, or is it a new praise or comment each day?  You may bring up new concerns from time to time, but in what new ways do you encounter the One who is the same yesterday, today, and forever?  What do you think Heaven will be like?  If you ascribe to the popular image off everyone singing hymns and playing harps, you are likely misguided.  Even if you don’t really like to sing, or are not proud of your voice now, you will be surprised at what you are capable of in the right environment.  I truly believe that we will all worship God in new ways, with our voices, our hands, and our hearts.  What language will we all speak and sing, or will it be something new that we will all know and understand?  We will all be part of something much bigger than our own current abilities.  Maybe we can even start that now, before our number is called in this life.  Worship God with a new song today, in what you do and say as you go about your day.  As you give Him thanks and praise in new ways each day, it will bring a new awareness of God’s ability to grow and create new life in us each day as well.

And they sang a new song, saying: “You are worthy to take the scroll and to open its seals, because you were slain, and with your blood you purchased for God persons from every tribe and language and people and nation.  Revelation 5:9
