Genesis 33:14-17 New International Version (NIV)
14 So let my lord go on ahead of his servant, while I move along slowly at the pace of the flocks and herds before me and the pace of the children, until I come to my lord in Seir.”
15 Esau said, “Then let me leave some of my men with you.”
“But why do that?” Jacob asked. “Just let me find favor in the eyes of my lord.”
16 So that day Esau started on his way back to Seir. 17 Jacob, however, went to Sukkoth, where he built a place for himself and made shelters for his livestock. That is why the place is called Sukkoth.
We do not know why Jacob stopped at Sukkoth and did not go on to Seir. Sukkoth is a beautiful area on the eastern side of the Jordan River, so he may have wanted to stay there. Another reason could have been that he knew he had been forgiven by his brother and the two were in good standing with each other. He may not have wanted that to be hindered. Whatever the reason, Jacob and Esau parted in peace and lived fairly close to each other until after their father’s death. Is there someone you have forgiven or maybe you have been forgiven? Have you parted in peace? Part in peace and live your best life.
