Genesis 44:32-33 New International Version (NIV)
32 Your servant guaranteed the boy’s safety to my father. I said, ‘If I do not bring him back to you, I will bear the blame before you, my father, all my life!’
33 “Now then, please let your servant remain here as my lord’s slave in place of the boy, and let the boy return with his brothers.
Judah made a promise. He was going to guarantee his brother’s safety. He kept that promise. He was now going to become a slave. This was a terrible fate, but his word to his father meant more to him. This showed great courage. He accepted responsibility even with it being a great sacrifice. Have you even made a promise that required a sacrifice? Accepting responsibility for a promise means carrying it out with determination and courage. This can be a great personal sacrifice, so do not make promises lightly. Be ready to carry out what you say you will do. This is a positive character quality to have.
