Exodus 34:12-14 New International Version (NIV)
12 Be careful not to make a treaty with those who live in the land where you are going, or they will be a snare among you. 13 Break down their altars, smash their sacred stones and cut down their Asherah poles. 14 Do not worship any other god, for the Lord, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God.
The Israelites were not to join into the religions of the people around them. They were to give their absolute loyalty to God. There can be no mixing of worship. For example, in in Luke 16:13, Jesus said, “No one can serve two masters … You cannot serve both God and money.” Are you having trouble with worshiping other things and putting them first? Do not get enslaved with putting things first before God. Make your first allegiance to God, and then everything else will fall into place. God will make your path straight.
