14 “Neither,” he replied, “but as commander of the army of the Lord I have now come.” Then Joshua fell facedown to the ground in reverence, and asked him, “What message does my Lord have for his servant?”
15 The commander of the Lord’s army replied, “Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy.” And Joshua did so.
This may have been an angel of superior rank. He was the commander of the Lord’s army. It is also thought that this may have been an appearance of God in human form. Either way, we do know that this was an appearance deserving of respect of authority. Joshua took off his sandals in respect. Awe and respect are due to God because he is our Creator and Leader. How do you show respect to God? First, by your attitude you show respect. Next, recognize God’s power, authority, and deep love. Then, your actions will model reverence for God. Remember, God is just as important today as he was in Joshua’s day.
