14 The Israelites sampled their provisions but did not inquire of the Lord. 15 Then Joshua made a treaty of peace with them to let them live, and the leaders of the assembly ratified it by oath.
16 Three days after they made the treaty with the Gibeonites, the Israelites heard that they were neighbors, living near them. 17 So the Israelites set out and on the third day came to their cities: Gibeon, Kephirah, Beeroth and Kiriath Jearim.
The bread was dry and moldy. The wineskins were split open. The clothes were worn out. This was deception. Why had the people of Israel again forgotten to seek God’s guidance? They rushed ahead and made a rash decision. The peace treaty seemed innocent enough, so they made the decision on their own without consulting God. They failed to seek God and went ahead with their own plans. You can learn from the Israelites’ mistakes. When a new situation comes around, seek God’s wisdom and guidance. Learn from your lessons of the past, as well as, the Israelite’s past. Apply these lessons to your life and save yourself trouble.
