Deuteronomy 7:6-8 New International Version (NIV)
6 For you are a people holy to the Lord your God. The Lord your God has chosen you out of all the peoples on the face of the earth to be his people, his treasured possession.
7 The Lord did not set his affection on you and choose you because you were more numerous than other peoples, for you were the fewest of all peoples. 8 But it was because the Lord loved you and kept the oath he swore to your ancestors that he brought you out with a mighty hand and redeemed you from the land of slavery, from the power of Pharaoh king of Egypt.
How did Israel deserve to be the chosen nation out of all the other nations in the world? It was not a matter of merit. They did not deserve it. They did not earn it. It was not that they were better than others. It was a matter of keeping a promise. God keeps his promises. His Word is his Bond. God was keeping his promise to Israel’s ancestors. God chose the nation of Israel. God has chosen all believers. Believers are God’s treasured possession. It is not because of merit, deserving, or earning that you have come to faith in Christ. We are chosen out of the goodness and grace of God. You are a treasured possession when you put your faith in Jesus Christ. You belong to him and he belongs to you.
