How is your day starting out? Sometimes we can get started well, and other days we may feel like we are behind the ball when we get out of bed. We may not have slept well, are worried about something we have to do today, or just not feel 100 percent for whatever reason. Regardless, sometimes the things that impact our day are from external sources, and other times it comes from inside of us, whether good or bad. The eternal optimist can have a great day regardless of what happens to him, while the eternal pessimist can have a miserable day even when he wins the lottery. Regardless of your attitude, some days are better than others. So, what’s it going to be today?
This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it. Psalm 118:24
Earlier this week, I was having a slow start one day, as I was going through some work tasks that were not going as planned. Later in the day, I felt the urge to investigate a tire that had been leaking and after airing it up again, I inspected it and eventually found what looked like a foreign object in the middle of the tire. I pulled out a broken nail and patched it up all in about 15 minutes and thought to myself, ‘even if it was a lousy day, at least I fixed a tire.’ It may not be the best perspective, but it did put a decent spin on the day. There were other high and low spots as well, like any day, but sometimes the little things can make or break your attitude as well. What things bring you encouragement and confidence as you go through your day?
Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path. Psalm 119:105
There have been times in my life where I was praying and reading the Word daily and there have been times where this was not the case. The normal highs and lows of daily life were still going on, but I did notice that those days when I practiced those disciplines helped me deal with unexpected things and maintain a healthy attitude more consistently. So, by this logic, I should be in the Word and prayer every day, right? There are other healthy routines and practices that help as well, like eating well, regular exercise, and adequate sleep. Anytime these things are off, we get out of balance. So, if you are like me and feel you need to improve some of these things, start by focusing on one thing at a time and gradually add what you can as you go. May you find joy in the process as well.
All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be competent, equipped for every good work. 2 Timothy 3:16-17
