Teachers

by | Aug 4, 2022 | Vital Men Devotions

Did you have a favorite teacher when you were in school?  Maybe it was an elementary school teacher who really cared about you, or a high school coach or teacher that taught in a way that made the subject seem fun.  I actually liked most of the teachers in different ways, or maybe its that I appreciated them taking the time and having the patience to deal with me and others in school.  Even if you were homeschooled, your teacher probably had to practice more patience than most other teachers.  Though even teachers have their limits, as it is estimated that nearly ½ of all new teachers leave the profession within the first five years of teaching, which is a pretty high turnover rate.  Have you ever gone back and thanked one of your teachers for what they did?

Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.  Proverbs 22:6

Is there still a teacher you are following today?  Maybe not your high school English teacher, but someone you listen to or read regularly.  If you attend a local church, your pastor may count as a teacher you currently follow.  Maybe there are pastors or other teachers you enjoy listening to on the radio or online as well because you believe they have good insights into Scripture or have some good practical applications.  Regardless, you have likely been taught and trained by several different teachers over the course of your life and are, at least in part, a product of what they have taught.  In fact, you have likely taught others, through work in, Sunday school, or even in your own home, and you helped form who they have become as well.  Do you feel more convicted or responsible when you have to teach others what life lessons are important to know?  Would you go back and change anything?

Show yourself in all respects to be a model of good works, and in your teaching show integrity, dignity, and sound speech that cannot be condemned, so that an opponent may be put to shame, having nothing evil to say about us.  Titus 2:7-8

My niece started back to class earlier this week on her 8th birthday, and at least for now seemed excited to be back in school.  Some friends who homeschool have started back this week also.  So, if someone you know is actively teaching children, take a moment and thank them for all they are doing in forming up the next generation of young people who will one day make decisions that directly impact your life and mine.  May they make even better decisions that we have, and be led by God in each one.

A disciple is not above his teacher, but everyone when he is fully trained will be like his teacher.  Luke 6:40
