Dignity and Worth

Freeing Servants

12 If any of your people—Hebrew men or women—sell themselves to you and serve you six years, in the seventh year you must let them go free. 13 And when you release them, do not send them away empty-handed. 14 Supply them liberally from your flock, your threshing floor and your winepress. Give to them as the Lord your God has blessed you. 15 Remember that you were slaves in Egypt and the Lord your God redeemed you. That is why I give you this command today.

The Israelites were to release their servants after six years of service. They were to send them with enough food, so that they would have enough until they could meet their needs by some other means. God created each person with dignity and worth. This also reminded the Israelites that their freedom from Egypt was a gift from God. Do you have people who work for you? Do you treat your employees with dignity? God’s instructions still apply today. We must still be sure to treat employees and those who work for us with respect and economic fairness. Make sure you treat your employees with dignity and respect and pay a fair wage. If someone is doing a job for you, make sure you pay your bills and be respectful. We are all God’s creation, and He wants each person to be treated with dignity and worth.
