5 They said to him, “You are old, and your sons do not follow your ways; now appoint a king to lead us, such as all the other nations have.”
6 But when they said, “Give us a king to lead us,” this displeased Samuel; so he prayed to the Lord.
Israel harangued for a king. They thought a new system of government would change things for the better. Their foundational problem was disobedience to God. There problems would continue and get worse under the new system because they were not dealing with the foundational problem. There needed to be a uniting of faith. Had they submitted to God’s leadership, they would have thrived. Is your obedience to God weak? Do you live by the world’s standards? Make sure your faith in God touches all areas of your life and that you obey his commands. When you guard your faith and obedience to God, you will enjoy a contentedness and peace in your life.
