Genesis 12:5 New International Version (NIV)
5 He took his wife Sarai, his nephew Lot, all the possessions they had accumulated and the people they had acquired in Harran, and they set out for the land of Canaan, and they arrived there.
God had a plan to develop a nation of people. He would call these people his own. Abram was called to go to Canaan. Here, God would work to create a God-centered nation. He would create a moral nation. Even though this is a small area when you think about how big our world is, this land is a focal point for most of the history of Israel and the rise of Christianity. The land of Canaan is a small land, but it has had a huge impact on world history.
