Genesis 11:4 New International Version (NIV)
4 Then they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city, with a tower that reaches to the heavens, so that we may make a name for ourselves; otherwise we will be scattered over the face of the whole earth.”
The tower of Babel was a great human achievement. It was considered a wonder of the world. But the problem was that it was a monument to the people and not to God. You may have a monument built to yourself. The monument may be expensive clothes. The monument may be a big house. The monument may be a car. The monument may be a job. These are not wrong in themselves, but when they are used to get identity and self-worth, they take God’s place. Do not replace God with worldly possessions. What towers have you built in your life? Tear them down and get your identity and self-worth through God.
