Scripture:
So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. Isaiah 41:10
Lesson:
Last time we covered four major areas where people can get stuck in their recovery. Here are 3 more major areas. Here are 4 major areas where people can get stuck during their recovery.
1. You are afraid of the risk in making the necessary change
You may be paralyzed by the fear of failure. You have a fear of rejection or being hurt again. You may resist change (growth) because of the fear of the unknown. Jesus understands these fears! While He was on earth, he felt the same fears. Give all your fears to Him, and He will help you! This is a journey that we take one day at a time.
2. You are not willing to “own” your responsibility
You need to take responsibility for your past in a broken relationship, a damaged friendship, with a distant child or parent, and so forth.
3. You have not developed an effective support team
Do you have a sponsor or an accountability partner? Have you volunteered for a commitment to your recovery ministry? Do you have the phone numbers of others in your small group?
Application:
We have all experienced times when we’ve been stuck. For me, I get stuck in fear and pride. It’s only when I finally humble myself and surrender those fears to God that I can see the path forward again. This is a natural part of the recovery journey—as long as you don’t stay stuck. God will bring you out of it if you trust Him and rely on your support team to help guide you through.
Take a moment to reflect: What is one fear or piece of pride you need to surrender to God and share with your support team this week?
