So, yesterday we celebrated our daughter’s third birthday. I always say to people, celebrating birthdays is not all that exciting after you hit about 24 years of age or so. But when you are three, you get pretty excited. So, when your daughter gets excited about her birthday, most everyone around does too…its kind of contagious in a good way. So we had grandparents and aunts and uncles and cousins visiting in person and virtually, with cake and presents and fun times, and it was a special celebration. But is each day following as special as a three year old’s birthday? It is, but we don’t always realize it. We may go about our days as normal as can be, doing life with our families, our co-workers, and strangers we meet, but does it seem special? Do we feel special when things around us seem so average?
This is the day the Lord has made; We will rejoice and be glad in it. Psalm 118:24
While most days may not seem that special to us, or have as much a reason to celebrate anyway, the thing that makes them special are the special people with which we get to spend them. Who are the special people in your life? Most of us at some point have felt a genuine love for and from our family, our spouses, our friends, our mothers and others who we can say we were happy to have known. Many of us can say the same of our Lord, who has shown us love and mercy and given us the ability to do the same. Just spending an average day with special people makes that day special. Is today special to you too?
Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten by God. Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows. Luke 12:6-7
While some days, like birthdays, baptisms, graduations, holidays, etc. may seem special, what makes them most meaningful is that we get to celebrate with our families and friends and those around us who are special. Hopefully, it brings us a greater appreciation for the good things and people in our lives. Hopefully, it brings us a greater appreciation for our God and the faith and hope that we have in Christ. What makes each day special to you? I hope you see that potential that each day has and that you feel a greater degree of love as you do.
Yours in Christ,
