Deuteronomy 14:22-23
New International Version
Tithes
22 Be sure to set aside a tenth of all that your fields produce each year. 23 Eat the tithe of your grain, new wine and olive oil, and the firstborn of your herds and flocks in the presence of the Lord your God at the place he will choose as a dwelling for his Name, so that you may learn to revere the Lord your God always.
The Bible makes the purpose of tithing very clear. It teaches us to respect and honor the Lord and put him first in our lives. We are to give God the first and the best of what we earn. What you do first with your money shows what you value most. Giving the first part of your paycheck to God immediately focuses your attention on him. It also reminds you that you belong to God. A habit of regularly tithing can keep God at the top of your priority list, and it will give you proper perspective on everything else you have.
