The latest research tells us 75% of Americans are dehydrated. Lots of things are causing this; inadequate consumption of water, excess caffeine, energy drinks, alcohol, sweating, vomiting, diarrhea, fever or medicine-induced urination. Hot weather and high altitudes can also contribute.
How much water should I drink? The basic rule is to drink 50% of your body weight in ounces. For example if you weigh 160lbs, you should aim for 80 ounces of water or more. This can change based on workouts and exertion at your job. Do not wait until you “feel” thirsty, or you are already 1-2% dehydrated. Try not to “chug” water. Slow, steady sips all day will do the drink. Look for waters enriched with sodium and magnesium when possible. Do not drink tap water. It is full of chlorine, arsenic and other contaminants which can be extremely harmful to our bodies.
Benefits of being properly hydrated:
1. Improved brain performance/cognition, which can reduce dizziness or headaches
2. Digestive harmony- it aids in breaking down foods properly so there is not unnecessary indigestion
3. Increased Energy– our bodies are made of almost 80% of water, it is essentially for so many processes in the body, it will simple make us feel good, lubricated through our joints and more fluid
4. Weight loss assistance– when you stay hydrated, it can bring a feeling of fullness which makes you think you are full, you will be less likely to overeat if you feel hydrated and full in this way, it can also boost your metabolism; simple put, you will more than likely consume fewer calories overall
5. Better temperature regulation-when have proper hydration, our bodies can warm up and cool down appropriately, this is essential in different seasons of weather or sickness
A special note for parents here. I am a parent of athletes. I have witnessed a few different times two of my children being dehydrated which lead to them passing out a few times. In the winter, kids are not as likely to think they are thirsty. Encourage them to drink water all year long. In the summer, the temps can get so high and humid. If kids are playing hard or doing a sport, water intake MUST be higher. We also add good, high mineral crunchy salt to their water as well. There are so many good companies now who sell good electrolytes. Some of our favorites are LMNT, Flav City, and Just Ingredients. You can find LMNT at Wal Mart now and Target. These provide high levels of minerals are body can lose through dehydration and keep our performance high.
Hydration is very important. Encourage your kids to drink a lukewarm glass of water first thing in the morning. It warms up the body to get ready for food and digestion. Steer clear of energy drinks, pop or high sugar liquids which rob the body of good stomach acid and proper hydration.
Drink up, your body will thank you for it!
Blessings,
Emily
